Elevating aerospace experiences with real-time 3D models:
In the rapidly evolving aerospace industry, interactive 3D assets are becoming crucial for engaging audiences, enhancing visualization, and promoting innovation. This project is an example of how real-time 3D assets, tailored to the aerospace sector, can create immersive experiences at live events. Here, we dive into the technical aspects, creative processes, and final results achieved in our work for our client and their planetarium display.
Project Overview
Client: RSACosmos, a leader in creating advanced visual experiences, engaged with us for an event showcasing the French aerospace industry.
Event Impact: The live event attracted over 2,000 attendees, all witnessing a real-time interactive display where they could engage with aerospace models like planes and rockets in an immersive planetarium setup.
Objective: Develop high-quality, real-time 3D models that could be integrated seamlessly into Unity, enabling users to interact with and explore complex aerospace assets in a planetarium display environment.
Tools and technology
We created assets that could hold in a 16K display without sacrificing real-time perfs.
Project scope and key challenges
RSACosmos required a complex Unity-based application that allowed users to transition between various aerospace models and interact with specific components by isolating them. Given the scale and the high-resolution demands, CoCollective Studio faced several unique challenges:
1. Accuracy
· The models needed to be engineeringly accurate, for both exterior and interior.
· Each part can be selected and isolated, providing an interactive experience for users.
2. PBR workflow and optimization
· Our usual PBR (Physically Based Rendering) workflow is a perfect fit for realtime app
· 1 albedo, 1 normal, and 1 ORM map
3. High-resolution display requirements
· The 16K display resolution demanded four 4K UDIMs
· By finding the sweet spot between resolution and performance, we maintained visual quality without lag.
Results: an immersive aerospace display
The result was a seamless, real-time interactive planetarium display that captivated the audience. Our 3D assets provided 2 key advantages to this live event:
· Enhanced engagement: Real-time interaction allowed users to actively explore aerospace models.
· Educational impact: Detailed, explorable models helped attendees gain a deeper understanding of aerospace technology.
